Evaluating Building Form Designs Updated
Furthermore, because of the constraints with my work area size, the form needs to be movable. This is so I will have room to work around the boat while under construction. It also has to allow for the 4" rise of the floor at the back of the garage. And I want it to allow me access to the underside of the hull while under construction. So it needs to be tall enough to do this. However, its not simply a matter of making it taller.
I will eventually have to move the boat out of the garage and flip it over. This means that I will need to have some temporary structure above the keel to take the load of the boat as it flips over. All this and still get through a garage door opening that is only 80 inches high.
So I have spent a fair amount of time mulling this over and Ive gone through four design versions of the form (on paper) trying to figure this out. Here is version 3. Forgive the crudity of the drawing. This version assumed that I would build the boat with the aft end at the back of the garage. The shorter legs would compensate for the rise in the floor. (The scale is way off!!!!)
There are several disadvantages to this design. The shorter legs mean that when I roll the form out of the garage to gain working room at the transom end, I would have to add temporary longer legs to support the boat. Because my driveway is tilted, the long horizontal piece on the right side would be hanging out in the air when the form is moved out. Again, I would have to add some support under this temporarily. And the form is more complicated because of the difference in leg heights. Finally, clearance of the sides was impractical because of the width at the back of the boat.
For version 4, I decided to see what would happen if I were to build the boat with the bow at the back end of the garage.
This version places the long horizontal piece on the right above the rise in the floor. All of the legs would be on the lower floor so there is no need to make some of them shorter. Because the bow is narrower than the stern, I will have much more clearance on the sides. This means that I will not have to move the form out of the garage as far in order to work on the bow end. Barring any other things I havent thought of , I believe this is the version I will be building. The drawing doesnt show it, but it will be suitably braced so that it is quite rigid. There will also be locking casters mounted to the legs so the form can be moved.

So I need to probably sped a bit more time thinking about this and then compile a materials list for the wood and hardware to build the form.

I did a bit more thinking and ended up with version 5. A bit more rigid and the rolling portion is better designed. Pictures will be coming in the future as I begin construction. Still have to buy the materials.
A Useful Trick
The reason is purely cosmetic, as far as I know. Because it needs to be cut from a fairly thick piece of wood, for the reasons described in previous posts, the breasthook has a fairly clunky look if you dont cut a bottom camber. At least to my eyes.
But just hollowing out the bottom of the hook would both be difficult and weaken the wood. Is there a better way?

The chamfer, correctly executed, will give the appearance of a cambered bottom, while still retaining most of the strength of the original hook. As a side benefit, its simple and easy to cut with hand tools.
The first step is two draw the two lines that will define the edges of the chamfer.
The first line is drawn along the curved edge, parallel with the bottom, about 1/2" from the bottom. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of this line, but the line will be clearly shown in the photos below. I used an ordinary carpenters marking gauge to draw this line.
The second line is drawn on the bottom, in a curve that follows the curve of the back edge. I drew this line with a pair of dividers, opened to about an inch. You can see this line in the photo below. Click on the photo for a closer look.
The chamfer must be wide enough to remove much of the wood in the notches, below the inwales. You want the curved back edge to be about as thick as the inwale, so the inwale and hook look all of a piece.
Then it was a simple matter of connecting the two lines with the chamfer, but cutting away the wood in between. This was easily done with my old, but very sharp draw knife. This tool scares the bejesus out of me, but there is no doubt that it gets the job done.
The draw knife removed most of the wood. I followed up with a spokeshave, and then sandpaper, to smooth the cut.

You can see that very little wood was actually removed. It only took a few minutes to do both sides. The key, as usual with hand tools, is a good, sharp edge, a steady hand, and a bit of patience.
Heres an end-on shot showing how little wood I actually removed.
However, the effect is fairly dramatic. From a normal viewing angle, the hook looks much thinner than it is, because you cant see the chamfer. In other words, its an optical illusion. The hook is still very thick and strong. It just doesnt look that way.
Its hard to tell from the photo above, but the curved back edge of the hook is now about as thick as the inwale. So when the inwale is twisted into position and fastened, it will blend nicely into the curve of the hook.
So that turned out to be easier than expected, thanks to a boatbuilders trick passed on to me through the Wooden Boat forum. A great resource.
Next up, those pesky knees at the other end of the inwale. The ones I have are weak and dont fit well. With my new-found breasthook skills, I should be able to fit a pair, but Im not sure I have enough oak left in my shop to build them! Time to start digging through my scrap box...

op and pumped 30 or so gallons of fuel into tank #4 . I temporarily wired a plug end on to the fuel pump transfer switch and once I made sure I had the correct valves open ( I need to label the tanks), I turned the pump on. It took a about a m
inute for the pump to pick up the fuel, but once the the fuel hit the flow meter the sound of the pump changed and the flow meter started clicking off tenths of gallons. It felt good to finally have a system up and running.To make sure things were as they appeared, I checked the amperage draw on the pump. The pump is only pulling 5 amps, which is lower than its full load rating. I also ran the pump for five minutes to check the flow rate. The flow rate of the pump is just about 220 gallons per hour based on my five minute run time. The flow rate I measured is is exactly as advertised by the manufacturer. The 1000 series Racor filter is rated at 190 gallons per hour maximum flow, so I have to figure out what is happening with the measured flow rate of the pump and the maximum flow rate the filter is advertised as capable of. At a first glance, I would have figured that the filter can only physically allow 190 gallons per hour of flow through it given the micron size of the filter media. I might put in a call to Racor and ask their opinion. A gate valve would choke down the flow rate and give the pump some head to work against. Ive always felt that pumps live longer if they have some head to push against.
I want to install a vacuum gauge on the filter to monitor when it begins to clog. I think Ive seen Racors with a vacuum gauge in the "T" handle, and given how Ive plumbed things, that looks like a good option.
After I had ran the electric pump for a half hour or so, I closed a valve, and opened the two valves for the emergency manual transfer pump. I pumped about five gallons to see how it worked, and Im pleased to say it worked fine. I will say that whenever one of the kids makes it to ye ole shit list, they can meet me in the engine room to manually transfer a 100 gallons of fuel.
It really feels good to finally have a system up and running. Because I now have all the fuel pipe work completed, some of the smaller jobs will begin to fall in to place. I can now install the generator in its final resting spot vs rolling it around the engine room on 3/4" pvc pipe. Once the generator is set, I can finish the conduit run for my AC in the engine room, and so on and so on....
Now that I have fuel running through the tanks, I will continue on my schedule and build the fuel system for the main engine and generator. This is not nearly as complex or costly as the transfer system, so hopefully Ill have that up and running in a week. Ill fire the engine once I have all the fuel parts in place.

All the drawers in the salon are built using half blind dovetails. I used a Porter Cable dovetail jig, and cant really complain about what a nice job these jigs do. The drawer box was built with half blind dovetails on the front, and a dado on the back.The bottom of the drawer is also let in to the sides with a dado. The actual drawer front, the part one sees when the drawer is closed, is screwed to the drawer box after the drawer is fit in to the opening. Another way to do this would be to use a rabbeted half blind dovetail drawer, which dovetails the drawer finished front the the drawer sides. The rabbeted half blind joint is more precise, and a joint I really did not feel like messing with. I like the flexibility of being able to adjust the drawer front by using the half blind joint.
I used some of my Cherry to build the drawer half blind drawer front. For the sides, I used Ash which I have had in the barn loft for twelve or so years. The back of the drawer is 3/4" Birch plywood. The bottom of the drawers is 1/4" Oak or Birch plywood ( whatever I had in the barn). I planed the Ash sides to 5/8" thick just because I like the look the thinner stock gives, and I made the Cherry front 3/4". The decorative front of the drawers is also 3/4" Cherry that I rounded over the edge with a 3/8 round over bit. The Porter Cable dovetail jig is a nice tool. The drawers work best if you keep the height of the drawers in one inch increments the add a 1/4". So drawers with heights of 3 1/4", 4 1/4", 5 1/4" and so on work the best. Its not a deal killing act if one doesnt build to these dimensions, its just that the half pins look best and centered by sticking to the whole plus 1/4". Success of building a drawer is good layout, and making sure all your cuts are perfectly square and all stock is jointed straight and planed flat. I have a half way decent miter saw, but I still prefer to make all my critical cuts on the table saw using stops to make sure all my stock is exactly the same length. Theres no mistaking that the table saw is the work horse of the shop.
One of the center pieces of the Salon is the dinette. The dinette has four drawers under it and also has the chase way for the wheel house air conditioning duct and the salon air conditioning duct. In order to keep things moving along, I decided to build the dinette drawer unit as a modular piece. Because I am going to be moving the drawer unit to the launch site, I had to be able to keep it square. In order to do this I let in a diagonal brace gluing and screwing it in place. The hardware Im using wont work right unless everything is square and true. 
Now that the drawers, and cabinets are completely finished, the next item on the to do list is the dinette itself. The dinette table is going to collapse down to make a bed, and will be large enough for two to sleep in.
Another builder I follow is working on his building the sail rig of his 75 schooner named Phoenix. He has a lot of nice colloquialisms, and one that fits what Im doing is " this is not a how to do this, rather how I did it".
This for sure describes what I have happening on my boat building adventure, and I think Ill be quoting James again in he future if its OK with James.

This stationary houseboat was designed in 1966. She is constructed of fiberglass. Its an interesting concept. The design was inspired by some sketches prepared for the owner by the famous French architect Jacques Couëlle. Here are are few of the conceptual sketches.

The boat was built by Campania de Navegacion Passat of Panama but we have no idea where she made her home. I do plan to keep an eye out for her the next time I am walking along the Seine River in Paris.
